
World Environment Day is observed yearly on the 5th of June. Its a day set aside by the United Nations (UN) to raise awareness about the environment with a focus on issues of Global Warming, Ozone depletion, Climate Change, Forests Conservation, Marine Pollution and the Preservation of Aquatic and Terrestrial Life and several other Environmental challenges and Occurrences.
This year's theme revolves around Time for Nature “Celebrating Biodiversity”. “With 1 million species facing extinction. The importance of Biodiversity cannot be overemphasized.
Reliving Goals 13, 14 and 15 of the SDGs, we can agree that several of the SDG Goals speaks to this year's theme focusing on Biodiversity.
We must all take a stand to protect, nurture and preserve our natural Environment.
The Challenges confronting the Environment is traceable to Man's improper use and abuse of the Environment.
As one of ALIVE'S thematic Area and work focus, we have built and maintained conversations around the issues of sustainable development especially with recourse to the livelihoods of Women who are most impacted by Environmental degradation and pollution.
Women cultivate, harvest and market farm produce and continue to bear the brunts of poor yield due to Environmental damage.
The burden of Food Security is placed on them even within the value chain.
Our organization,. ALIVE is part of the Gender Talk Group ( GTG) and features in discussions addressing WOMEN's agricultural experiences.
As the World commemorates this Day,
*We join our voices with activists all over to draw attention to the Environmental Injustice in the Niger Delta particularly Ogoniland.
* We also demand expedite action on the full implementation of the UNEP report.
* We seek Climate Justice action for all Niger Delta Communities impacted by Climate Change.
* The impact of explorative activities of Extractive Industries, Multinational Corporations and local artisanal refineries on the Niger Delta Environment should be greatly
reduced.
* Environmental Polices should be pro-people and provide for adequate remediation of any impacted environment.
